Acorn Amps Kakarot Fuzz pedal: germanium and silicon transistors plus LED clipping sweep from gritty boost to fuzz crunch. Level and Fuzz controls, 125B aluminum case, true bypass. Hand-built in Atlanta, GA. Shop it at Town Center Music, Suwanee GA.
The Acorn Amps Kakarot Fuzz is a hybrid two-transistor fuzz pedal that sweeps from a gritty boost to full fuzz crunch with a single knob. It pairs one hand-picked NOS germanium transistor with one silicon transistor, then sends the signal through a pair of LEDs for added clipping. Hand-built and hand-wired by Acorn Amplifiers in Atlanta, Georgia, it takes its name and its power-level humor from Dragon Ball, and the maker promises it will push your pedalboard past 9000.
Germanium transistors are prized for warm, rounded, vintage-flavored fuzz, while silicon transistors add bite, output, and clarity. The Kakarot combines both: a germanium stage feeds into a silicon stage, giving you the character of one and the muscle of the other. A pair of LEDs at the end of the circuit adds a clipping stage that gives the fuzz extra zing and beefs up the output. The Acorn Circuit Fuzz is a similar pedal, and the Kakarot differs by adding that final LED clipping section.
The Fuzz control does a lot of work. Turned low, it behaves like a gritty boost. In the middle of its range you get overdrive and distortion textures, and turned up it moves into wild, crunchy fuzz. The Level control sets the pedal's overall output, so you can place your signal exactly where it belongs in the mix, whether that's a subtle lift or a loud lead.
Fuzz pedals respond strongly to your guitar and your amp, and a hybrid circuit like this one is no exception. Start with the Fuzz knob low for a light, gritty boost, then turn it up gradually until the texture moves into overdrive, then distortion, then full fuzz. Set Level last, matching it to your bypassed volume or pushing it higher for solos. Because fuzz circuits interact with your guitar's volume control, rolling your guitar's volume back is a good way to clean the tone up without switching the pedal off.
The Kakarot is a great fit for guitarists who want fuzz that isn't one-dimensional. Because the Fuzz knob covers so much territory, one pedal can handle a light boost for rhythm parts, a gritty overdrive for blues, and a full fuzz tone for solos. Its compact 125B enclosure makes it easy to fit on small boards, and its small current draw is friendly to nearly any power supply. Garage, indie, classic rock, and alternative players will find plenty to like, and Dragon Ball fans will enjoy the theme.
What type of fuzz is the Kakarot? A hybrid fuzz using one germanium transistor and one silicon transistor, followed by LED clipping.
Can it do more than fuzz? Yes. The Fuzz knob sweeps from a slight gritty boost through overdrive and distortion to full fuzz crunch.
Is it true bypass? Yes. When the pedal is off, your signal passes through unaffected.
What power does it need? Standard 9VDC pedal power, with a current draw of less than 30mA.
How is the Kakarot different from the Acorn Circuit Fuzz? The two are similar effects, but the Kakarot adds a clipping section made of a pair of LEDs at the end of the circuit.
Where should I put it in my signal chain? Fuzz pedals generally work best early in the chain, right after your guitar or a wah, because they react to your pickups and volume knob.
Does Town Center Music ship this pedal? Yes. Orders over $100 ship free.
